Team Xecuter Xbox 360 Firmware Hack Update
Author: Bill Naked Teens
Team Xecuter(info) posted another news post about the Xbox 360 Firmware Hack. If you missed the earlier reports about this hack, go here and here. From teamxecuter.com:
We have opened up a new forum dedicated to Xbox 360 Development
http://www.teamxecuter.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=69
We have made some progress with a new read/patch/write app and no doubt you will all be plugging in your drives to your PC and having some fun shortly - all for free too as no modchips required (and yes we still want to play!)
Here is what we envisage…
* Connect Xbox 360 DVD-ROM to PC
* App to update firmware with magic code
* Connect DVD-ROM back to 360 - and away you go
Also this site has some killer information: http://www.kev.nu/360/dvdshort.html [posted yesterday on x-s, more info on what it is here]
Obviousley the only use for this is piracy - hence you wont see any modchips (not from us at least - however they wouldn’t be needed anyway - however we do have a few cheap tools to make life much easier - more on that soon). Still a long long way off from unsigned code - but it’s a start….
Thanks to The Specialist for reviving the scene! We understand he doesn’t want to release anything due to possible backlash - but there are many of us who would - and will.
Keep your eyes on our 360 forums for updates…

Microsoft’s Plans For Handheld Game Player And iPod Killer
Author: Bill Naked Teens
From Dean Takahashi at mercurynews.com:
In a bid to capture the huge audience for handheld entertainment gadgets, Microsoft is designing a product that combines video games, music and video in one handheld device, according to sources familiar with the project.
The Microsoft product would compete with Sony, Nintendo and Apple Computer’s products, including the iPod. And Microsoft has some of its most seasoned talent from the division that created its popular Xbox 360 working on it. Game executive J Allard leads the project, and its director is Greg Gibson, who was the system designer on the Xbox 360 video game console. Bryan Lee, the finance chief on the Xbox business, is leading the business side of the project.
In the past, all of Microsoft’s efforts to compete have fallen short. The company considered making an “”Xboy” game player a few years ago but shelved the idea. It considered making a game handheld at the same time it devised plans for the Xbox 360 in 2002 and 2003, but it again decided to delay its entry.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s efforts in PocketPC handhelds and Portable Media Players have fallen short in competition with the iPod. Last week, Microsoft unveiled Project Origami, a handheld Windows computer. But that device isn’t targeted on pure entertainment as the Xplayer is. The existence of these other projects suggests that there is still some infighting within Microsoft about its best approach to portable gadgets.
The handheld project is still in its early stages. Microsoft is still figuring out which strategy to pursue in music technology, according to sources familiar with the matter. The code name for its music service, which would be the equivalent of Apple’s iTunes, is “Alexandria.”
One benefit of waiting longer is that the handheld will likely have sufficient technology in it to run a lot of original Xbox games from a few years ago. Hence, it wouldn’t be hard to create a new library of games for the handheld.
What remains to be seen is when Microsoft will launch the device. Gibson may not need a large engineering team to run the project. But his group of hardware engineers only became free last fall, when most work on the Xbox 360 was completed.
It could be 2007 before the device hits store shelves. That gives rivals such as Sony, Nintendo and Apple considerable time to consolidate their position and come up with their own new gadgets in the meantime.

Microsoft Unveils XNA Framework, Opens Xbox Live Service
Author: Bill Naked Teens
From the pressrelease:
In the face of escalating game development costs, expanding teams and ever more complex hardware technologies, Microsoft Corp. today delivered a pre-release version of the first XNA Studio tools and unveiled the XNA Framework to attendees of the Game Developers Conference 2006 in San Jose. Microsoft also announced that the company is opening its Xbox Live Server Platform to game developers and publishers, allowing them to innovate and extend the Xbox Live experience in their titles.
This community technology preview (CTP) represents the first public opportunity for game developers to get their hands on key components of XNA Studio. Included in the CTP is a pre-release version of XNA Build, which delivers mechanisms for orchestrating, debugging and optimizing the game build pipeline. XNA Build also provides studios with a foundation that helps them easily identify game asset relationships and dependency information to unlock a wealth of benefits, ranging from incremental content builds to assistance in identifying orphaned or unused content. Tools such as XNA Build enable game developers to spend less time building and maintaining their internal tools infrastructure, and more time creating great game experiences.
The XNA Framework contains a custom implementation of the Microsoft. .NET Framework and new game-development-specific libraries designed to help game developers more easily create cross-platform games on Windows and Xbox 360 using the highly productive C# programming language. Using the XNA Framework, game developers will benefit from the ability to re-use code and game assets in developing multiplatform titles, without sacrificing performance or flexibility.
In addition to XNA Studio, Microsoft today announced further enhancements for extending Xbox Live services with the Xbox Live Server Platform. Using this platform, developers can create their own back-end servers to run alongside Xbox Live. Developers will get firsthand experience with this update which provides easier-to-manage and more scalable technology on Xbox Live in the next Xbox Development Kit, expected in May.
By opening the Xbox Live Server Platform, Microsoft provides developers and publishers with the tools and environments they need to create all-new online game experiences, and delivers the benefits of an open platform for innovation while providing the solid foundation of the full-featured Xbox Live service. Developers will be able to tap into real-time Extensible Markup Language (XML) feeds to update things such as weather, rosters or other changing information. The Xbox Live Server Platform can also be used to support the creation of massively multiplayer online game worlds. In addition, it will serve as the enabling technology for game developers to unleash their creativity to bring a steady stream of fresh ideas to the Xbox Live gamer community.

Xbox 360 DVD Firmware Hack - Follow-up
Author: Bill Naked Teens
A bit more news about the Xbox 360 DVD Firmware Hack we talked about yesterday.
If you missed the news yesterday, I posted lots of info there already, check it out here so you can catch up and understand what’s below.
* SeventhSon on the xboxhacker.net forums has been working on getting the Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L DVD drive working on Linux and Windows the last few weeks. Yesterday I said it was required to open your DVD drive and remove the firmware chip to read the Hitachi-LG DVD firmware and/or to get the unique 16 byte key, but on SeventhSon’s page he explains how you can get this drive connected and recognized by Linux and Windows. He even programmed a few cmd-line tools (also available for windows and linux) that will allow you to dump the memory (incl. ‘forbidden ranges’), firmware and unique key of the DVD drive on your PC and also tools to write (peek/poke single bytes) to the DVD memory (not firmware) and execute arbitrary MN103 code (this drives used the MN103 DVD chipset) from a PC on the drive.
Now, to flash your firmware you will still need to open your dvd drive and flash the firmware with a chip programmer (for now atleast, people are searching how to make it flashable via PC) (also note that chip is epoxied, so it’s probably best to removed it to flash it), but with these tools you can already dump the firmware without chip programmer. So people out there with enough asm/assembly knowlegde that would like to take a look at the firmware themself but don’t have a chip programmer can use this method.
Very technical details about his research are available on this page[kev.nu], but end-users will do just fine with this ’summary’ page[kev.nu].
* Team xecuter also posted a bit about the hack:
Well done from Xecuter(info)!
(Pretty much) all the information you need is in these threads [note x-s: keep in mind these are threads in the XBH technical forum - technical/serious posts only please].
* The Challenge Response Protocol
* Hacking DVD firmware AGAIN
* Dumping Security Sector with H-943A
* Getting XBOX drives to work in windows
From what we can tell so far is that the game image will have to be patched too - We can smell a new feature for Qwix(info) 2
The scene can expect a hack for all drives very soon (It’s currently only Hitachi) - you can be assured that it will be released although I don’t think modchips will be any kind of business as its a pure piracy mod - no homebrew at all.
*UPDATE* Team Xecuter posted more about the hack, find it in our new post here.
* Xlife.nl posted an nice interview with TheSpecialist (in dutch - translated to english by me):
Xlife: Tell us a bit about yourself for the visitors of Xlife.nl (who are you?, what’s your job in real-life?, age?, …)
TheSpecialist: Usually asking the age is indiscreet, but in this case it’s the only one I want to answer, hehe, I’m 30.
Xlife: How many people worked on the project?
TheSpecialist: 6 hackers were in the team. Although I think you can’t say that only these 6 people made the hack: without the contributions from other people on XBH this would never have succeeded, it would have taken much more time anyway.
Xlife: How long did you actually work on this hack?
TheSpecialist: It’s hard to say how many hours were put into this hack. We started last year analysing the original Xbox DVD firmware security because very few was known about it. We were expecting that the Xbox 360 security was based on this one and good knowledge into the security of the original Xbox would probably give useful insight for the protection in the Xbox 360 (and it looks like we were right). The reason we started with the original Xbox is because the kernel was easy to rip which helped us to find out when the original Xbox kernel went ‘OK’ with a DVD.
Xlife: Did you have contact with Microsoft about this hack?
TheSpecialist: No
Xlife: Why did you decide not to release the hack publicly?
TheSpecialist: The Xbox 360 was announced by Microsoft as the best protected console on earth and that hackers would be surprized by the unseen high level of security. This type of statements makes most hackers excited/interested. For me personally it looked like a great challenge to find out if the security was really so good. I think this motivation applies for pretty much all hackers on XBH. To look for security bugs was thus the real goal. Distribute a hack like this has nothing do to with ‘hacking’ and has also never been my goal.
Xlife: Aren’t you concerned/worried that you gave ideas to people and that these will duplicate your hack and release it publicly?
TheSpecialist: To start with I think the hack isn’t interesting for the average end-user in it’s current status, because you need specific hardware and knowlegde to flash the drive. The current hack is also easy to patch for Microsoft because a backup differs on several points from the original and Microsoft could easily check for this. A ‘perfect’ emulator, that reports a backup in ALL possible ways exactly the same way to the Xbox 360 as an original disc is outside our scope and this would also require a lot of work/time. There’s a possibility that this would start a cat&mouse game, where Microsoft comes with new patches and hackers will hack this again, … So this means that as long as there’s no ‘perfect emulator’ Xbox LIVE users will always risk getting banned and if they don’t want to take this risk they will still have to buy original games.
Xlife: Did you directly start hacking the DVD firmware or did you first try hacking other parts of the Xbox 360?
TheSpecialist: No, we started directly with the firmware. The DVD firmware project on XBH is totally separated from, for example, the guys at free60.org
Xlife: Is it possible to play games on Xbox LIVE with your hack?
TheSpecialist: At this moment yes, but that’s till Microsoft comes with a patch.
Xlife: What’s your opinion about the fact that people doubt the authenticity of the small video you released?
TheSpecialist: The proof is in the hardware details on the XBH forums, not in the video. I released the original video now [see here[rapidshare.de - 100MB high quality version of first movie and with original sound]], that will already crush the speculation of a 2nd Xbox 360 in the reflection of the TV. I also think that if you carefully watch the movements of the laser you can no longer say this is fake. If you’d put a backup in a normal Xbox 360 the laser would not move the same way (see for example the movements to the outer edge of the disc, where it reads the security placeholder data). Only with very expensive hardware and lots of work and money a video like this could be faked.
Xlife: Do you plan to try hacking other parts of the Xbox 360?
TheSpecialist: There are no plans for that at this moment.
Xlife: Is there something else you’d like to say to people reading this interview?
TheSpecialist: Like amiga release groups said in the ‘old days’:'A game worth playing is a game worth buying’. I don’t want to sound ‘moralistic’, but I always agreed with this ‘ideology’ and I hope others do too. I also thought it was great to see The Netherlands was well represented on XBH and I hope to welcome more interested dutch people in this little world.

Xbox360 DVD Firmware Hacked - Video
Author: Bill Naked Teens
As you know TheSpecialist and his team were working on a modified firmware for the Xbox 360. He already managed to make one for the original Xbox a while ago, and he announced this method was highly likely possible with the Xbox 360 too. From TheSpecialist on xboxhacker.net:
Months of hard work have come to an end. The 360 FW security details were posted a few days ago already, so why not make it official
It’s been done.
Respect to all the people on this board who made it possible with their brilliant contributions:
Anita999, Geremia, Nayr, Bluecop, Interestedhacker, MacDennis, Phantasm, Marvin, Tiros, SpenzerX, Team Modfreakz, Fuzzylogic, Takires, loser, jasper, SMO, Groepaz, Zobyone, Jumba, Amadeus, Tser, DjHuevo, oz_paulb, DaveX, darkfly, evestu, Robinsod, Dark_Neo, Gael360, Seventhson, probutus.
Just for fun, here’s a little video:
And no, the team decided not to release a hacked FW. The security details are proof itself. The team advocates hacking, not piracy.
What is this? A bit more info…
The hack is a modified firmware of the Xbox 360 Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L DVD-ROM drive (the security in the Toshiba/Samsung TS-H943 is said to be similar, so it’s probably also possible with this drive … but it does require it’s own hacked firmware of course).
As you (should) know, all Xbox 360 executables (XEX files) are signed by Microsoft (with a private key only MS has). This means that if you try to change anything to the XEX file, the signature will be wrong and the file will not boot.
Now … to protect from booting an exact copy of a game from a DVD-R or other recordable media, microsoft gave each XEX file a ‘mediaflag’. This mediaflag tells the Xbox 360 from which media (cd-r, dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, hdd, dvdxbox, dvdxbox360, …) the XEX is allowed to boot. Changing this mediaflag in the XEX header is not an option as it’ll break the signature of the file (see above), so … what’s done in this firmware hack is ‘break’ the detection of the disc.
Retail games usually get a mediaflag where they only allow ‘dvdxbox360′ (Xbox 360 discs - different than a normal DVD because it has some specific bad sectors and special info in lead-in/out that can’t be written with a standard dvd burner). The modified firmware will trick the DVD drive into reporting a DVD-R (or other) as a DVDXBOX360 to the Xbox 360.
How can you do this?
Well, right now you can’t. The firmware has not been released to the public because it would mostly be used for piracy and that’s not what this team wants (unlike the original Xbox hack this can’t be used (atleast not directly) for homebrew and linux fun). But the research done by these guys is public as you can read their discussions of the last few months on the xboxhacker.net forums, so people with good assembly experience should be able to duplicate this hack.
If the firmware was released, what would it mean?
Right now the Xbox 360 DVD firmware can’t be flashed via PC (and for us, end-users, even less directly by the Xbox 360 itself (Microsoft could probably flash the drive from Xbox360 tho)), because there’s no software to do this. Of course, drivers and flashing software for Xbox360 DVD drives could probably be written (and some people have been working on this), but so far this has not been done (atleast not publicly).
So, that means you’d have to open your Xbox 360, open your DVD drive and desolder the chip where the firmware is stored on.
Each Xbox 360 DVD drive has a unique key, if that key doesn’t match what your console is expecting your DVD drive will not work.
So next you will need to read your current firmware chip with special hardware (flash programmer), to find your unique DVD 16 byte key (stored at 0×4F00). Then you’ll have to insert this key in the modified firmware (or patch your original firmware) and program this modified firmware back on the firmware chip. Then put the firmware chip back in the drive, close DVD drive and Xbox 360 and I guess you’re done.
As said above the hack would allow you to run MS-signed and unmodified XEX files only, so that also means the game must be of right region (as changing the regionflag in the XEX header would break the signature). Unsigned, homebrew executables would of course not work, again because signature check would fail.
LIVE and Updates …
Can you go on LIVE with this hack? Well the firmware isn’t released, so noone can try, but I’d guess it would work yes. The Xbox 360 itself is fully in ‘normal state’, nothing is modified to the Xbox 360 itself, it just gets ‘wrong’ info from the DVD drive. Of course if you start modifying non-signed files (like textures, ini files, …) in order to cheat on LIVE or so MS could easily check for that.
Can Microsoft stop this firmware hack with forced LIVE updates? They could probably try detect a basic modified DVD firmware, but anything the Xbox 360 asks to the DVD drive goes via the DVD firmware, and if the firmware is ‘open’ in the hands of the hackers the firmware can probably each time be modified again to give the reply that the console expects. Microsoft could maybe do more with a HW security update … but I’ll let them analyse that.
(Note that all info above is based on all stuff I read … if I made any mistakes, let me know)

More About Asian Launch and Asian Game Price ($43 shipped) Worth Import?
Author: Bill Naked Teens
We already reported about the Xbox 360 launch in Taiwan earlier. Here are some extra pictures posted on the Team Xbox GamerScore Blog of the March 16th launch in Singapore, Hong Kong and more from Taiwan:
* Singapore invited MTV VJ Denise Keller and all sorts of gamers to an event at the Red Dot Gallery.
Before that, they went to the IT Show, from the 9-12. About 23k folks stepped up and got to play 360.
* Taiwan set up a group of Kiosks at the Kmall (if you live there, it’s near the Taipei station). It’s still going on, and here’s what it looks like:
* And Hong Kong had a huge midnight madness-type event.
The team also put up a count-down clock at New Town Plaza. Look at the size of this Xbox:
Sounds like we had a pretty sweet launch, so much so that productivity in Asia is expected to drop. Sweet.
More pictures of the launch in Singapore are available here[gameaxis.com], for the Taiwanese launch go here[sukimon.com].
With the launch of the Xbox 360 in asia (outside Japan) we also get to see the asian gameprice, which is pretty interesting as it’s well below the ~50-70usd / ~55-70eur pricetag we get here in the west.
As some Xbox 360 titles are not region locked it’s interesting to take a look at import stores like play-asia.com selling these titles for just 39.90usd. With worldwide airmail shipping at just 3.10usd that means you can get titles like Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion[not confirmed region free yet - so dont pre-order unless you have a NTSC/J console] for just 43usd (~35.25eur) delivered to your door instead of respectively ~60usd/70eur and ~60usd/62eur (amazon.com/fr prices).
Of course … keep in mind it’s possible you’ll have to pay importtaxes and for europe maybe also VAT. But with the basic airmail shipping the games get shipped in a small ‘letterbox’ and chances that it gets checked by the customs is pretty low (but possible I guess).
Also … always check the game is not region locked and in english … most online import stores list this in the description. Some asian titles so far (like GRAW) seem to be region free and in english (Oblivion is not confirmed to be region free yet because it’s not released yet). PAL regions also might want to make sure their TV can accept an NTSC signal, although I guess a PAL console will output a PAL signal even with a NTSC game (can anymore confirm this?).
Let us know what you think about this (pretty big, certainly for europe) price difference … would you consider importing games?, do you think it makes any difference on LIVE (like rooms you get into)? Could be worth buying an NTSC/J Xbox 360 so you can also buy the region locked titles from asia

Ballmer: Xbox will capitalize on PS3 delay
Author: Bill Naked Teens
From CNN Money:
After Sony announced on Tuesday that the Playstation 3 won’t launch until November, the Xbox 360 is in a better position to become the top gaming console, says Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
“In every other generation, the first guy to 10 million consoles was the number one seller in the generation,” Ballmer told FORTUNE in an interview on Thursday afternoon. “Did we just get an even better opportunity to be the first guy to 10 million? Yeah, of course we did.”
There is still a production bottleneck because of problems with a component vendor, whom Ballmer declined to name, but he expects Microsoft to sell 5 million systems by June. “We’re sort-of on track,” he says, “though it would’ve been nice at Christmas to have one for everyone who wanted one.”
Microsoft plans “major pushes” of the Xbox 360 in France, Italy, Spain and Japan — markets where the first generation Xbox didn’t perform as well as Microsoft hoped.
“I am palpably optimistic,” Ballmer says. “I think we are absolutely in the game for the market position it would be nice to have.”

Report from Xbox 360 Launch in Taipei, Taiwan
Author: Bill Naked Teens
From sukimon.com:
The launch party for the XBOX360 was on tonight in downtown Taipei around the Taipei 101 building, next to the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store. Based on what I saw, I’m guessing it went somewhat better than the Japan launch, but may have been somewhat muted due to the fact that the 360 has been available from gobs of game shops already due to the fact that Taiwan imports most of their games from Japan anyway.
The launch came complete with a stage and a pair of showgirl emcees, an XBOX360 branded Ford Focus, a buying station hosted by retailer FNAC, a capsule prize booth and of course, a battery of game kiosks.
The Pro version was 12,980NTD and the Core was 9,980NTD, about $401USD and $310USD respectively. The games are another matter - Perfect Dark Zero was selling for 1,380NTD, or about $43USD. I’ve already seen games like Dead or Alive 4 for about this much or 1,500NTD($46USD), way below the $60USD price point, as well as a Tetris game for pretty cheap, like $35USD or so.
I wandered around and found the game shed - a mockup living room complete with comfy sofa, HDTV, surround sound system and happy couple playing Dead or Alive 4.

More about Microsoft’s Origami: No Handheld Xbox, Connect to 360
Author: Bill Naked Teens
Here are 2 new articles about the Microsoft Origami, we talked about it here previously. The articles do not really give the same info, so I share them both with you.
The origamiproject.com has been updated too … not really more info except a date, March 9th 2006 (probably when MS will release official info), and a slogan/hint: “I am everywhere you are but never in the way”.
From gameinformer.com:
Microsoft supposedly has very high hopes for the system, even going as far as calling on the portable tablet to “replace the laptop.” It is said to be compatible with Windows Vista, but we don’t yet know if Origami will actually use it as an operating system or just use its own.
One of the biggest eye catching moments seen in the Origami video was a running version of what appeared to be Halo. We’ve learned that this isn’t just the PC or Xbox disc slid into the back. Origami will apparently run its very own proprietary gaming software, and a Halo port will most likely be one of the first titles released.
Perhaps the most interesting gaming feature, however, is Origami’s ability to connect to Xbox 360s. Once connected to a 360, presumably through the USB ports, Origami is expected to function as a second screen for compatible games. One example we heard specifically focused on a game in the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter vein. While you’re TV is displaying the main game, the Origami could show the first person view of another player to help with tactical planning. Or the Origami screen could display an overhead view of the battlefield from a flying probe. Sports games could use it for play calling in football games or the 24 second shot clock in basketball games. And remember, we’re talking about a touch screen here, so Origami could function as a controller as well as a dedicated screen. These are just a few of the many possibilities unlocked by such a setup. Let’s just hope if this all comes to fruition that Origami’s connectivity doesn’t crap out like Game Boy Advance’s.

With the AP’s report today, at least some of this speculation about Microsoft’s “Origami Project” can be mostly put to rest. The article clearly states that, again, according to the AP’s internal source who is “close to Microsoft”, the device isn’t an iPod-killer, isn’t a mobile phone or regular PC replacement, and lastly, it’s not a portable Xbox.
Instead, the device is reportedly the first in a series of “ultra-portable” computers that will be capable of running the standard Windows XP operating system. The platform will be manufactured by a variety of computer makers, and might sell anywhere from $500 to $1000.
The report states that “The computers will generally be less powerful than full-fledged PCs”, although their strengths will lie in general tasks such as photo editing, GPS, watching movies and checking e-mail. Apparently, the device will initially not have the advanced capabilities of Windows Media Center.
