Siemens computer reads road signs
Author: Bill Naked Teens
Ever been pulled over by a traffic officer because you failed to acknowledge the “No U Turn” as you were talking on the phone? Now, there is no excuse with a newly-developed technology from Siemens that is capable of reading road signs and alerting you to them. The on-board computer will process information taken from a special camera which will then display the corresponding information in a heads-up display on your windshield. For example, a speed limit sign will result in the legal limit being plastered beside your actual speed, so you know whether there is room to step on the accelerator or release the gas. Siemens hopes that their technology will make its way into vehicles over the next couple of years. I predict that users would get annoyed very quickly…

Averatec launches Voya 350 handheld NAV
Author: Bill Naked Teens
Averatec, a company known best for churning out laptops (and UMPCs as of late) has triangulated a route into the portable navigation market. The Voya 350, its first attempt in the lucrative GPS arena, is a handheld-sized unit that packs all the standard features you’d expect in such a device, and unfortunately not a whole lot more. Powered by a 300MHz Samsung CPU, 64MB of RAM, and operating on Windows CE.net, the Voya 350 displays turn-by-turn guidance while utilizing the usual NAVTEQ maps shown on the 3.5-inch TFT touch-screen. While no built-in hard drive is included, you can store excess data using the SD / MMC slot. Semi-noteworthy features include the 4 hours of battery life you can rely on while trekking in the rough, and weighing just 6 ounces, it makes for an easy tag-along. Although countless similar units have been available for quite some time, it’s not really as if one more unit is going to water down the GPS receiver market aymore, so if you’re hunting around for a portable nav device that’s a tad easier on the wallet than other offerings, the Voya 350 — albeit under-featured — looks like a solid value, and can be located now for around $400.

Design student crafts “Illume” LED display shelf
Author: Bill Naked Teens
Need a way to spruce up the house, but don’t quite have the coin for your very own talking mirror? Chris Owens, a design student at North Carolina State University, has crafted the perfect conversation piece using a common household item and LED lighting. While this was engineered for an assignment, the Illume LED display shelf has all the makings of a retail hit. The wall-mounted shelf has three platters which seem fairly typical — until you place an object on them. Then each section illuminates as LED lights below are triggered by weight on the touch-sensitive panels, which makes putting things away — especially glass or semi-transparent objects — a bit more entertaining than usual. While an estimated price and release date is unknown, it seems safe to say that Chris has a bright future ahead of him (ahem), and if LED-infused furniture suits your fancy be sure to check out the Illume in action.

Xbox 360 messenger bag
Author: Bill Naked Teens

Just like the Xbox 360 itself, the Xbox 360 messenger bag looks good on the outside with the hope that it will boast a decent degree of functionality as well. Unfortunately, both products doesn’t quite have what it takes inside to cut it. This messenger back is okay as a normal bag, but it fails miserably in its main purpose - to tote around the Xbox 360 and a bunch of peripherals. You will most probably suffer from a sore shoulder after lugging the Xbox 360 and its power supply after a couple of blocks anyway. You can purchase one from Amazon for $50.

iPod touch screen interface patent filed
Author: Bill Naked Teens

Apple has filed a patent that unveils details regarding a touch screen interface to be used in a future iteration of an iPod or a tablet-style device. Titled “Proximity detector in handheld device”, the patent document informs readers of how the interface works in navigating menus and making selections, all via finger movement on the screen. Whenever a user’s finger is near the screen, the touch screen interface would detect it and display a virtual scroll wheel and other inteface elements automatically. When will such technology be incorporated in future iPods, we don’t know. What we’re sure of is the fact that iPods are getting more and more sensitive with each generation, making the protective case all the more important.

Ilume lights up your pad
Author: Bill Naked Teens
Lend a touch of class in your home with the Ilume. This conceptual shelf was actually designed by a college student for his final year project. Apparently, such a shelf comes with a trio of separate sensors that detects whether there is anything placed on the shelf, lighting it up immediately with an extremely bright LED to create some ambient lighting. Should this device be commercialized, chances are it will fly off the shelves (pun not intended) as not only homes will clamor for it, but other nightspots as well for its coolness factor.

Psile 10a PC case outsexes Mac Mini
Author: Bill Naked Teens
Ever thought you would see a PC that would outstrip the Mac Mini in terms of sexiness? The day has finally arrived with the Psile 10a PC case. Looking extremely slick in its white cover, it lends an air of cuteness with its curved corners (making it child-friendly nulike most furniture lying around the house) and a CD that juts out like a tongue-in-cheek emoticon. A white LED in front denotes whether the power is turned on, and the Psile 10a uses a single 80mm case fan to keep things cool inside. All you can slot in is a mini ITX motherboard, a 3.5″ hard drive, a slot loading dual-layer DVD burner, and a single PCI add-on.

New UMPC to be unveiled
Author: Bill Naked Teens
Here’s an interesting picture that was submitted by an anonymous Korean member to Mobility Today that features the rounded corner of a device that leans toward the UMPC category. What is confirmed is this device will be running on an AMD Geode LX800 with 256MB of RAM. The picture also gives the release date away that is slated for August 10. If pictures paint a thousand words, we can deduce that this new UMPC-possibility will be running on Microsoft’s Windows XP. Unfortunately, we fear that such a device will never make its way state side like most cool Korea-only products. Bummer.

Future PSP plans revealed at Comic Con
Author: Bill Naked Teens
You wouldn’t necessarily think that San Diego’s annual Comic Con would be a hotbed of videogame news, but this year’s event proved different, as Sony revealed a number of exciting future plans for the PSP. At a seminar called PSP University (man, we sure wish we could have spent our college years at that institution), company execs confirmed that the portable console will indeed work as a remote for the PS3, and that the upcoming firmware update will support RSS video feeds for the built-in web browser. Furthermore, Sony is apparently in talks with wireless providers to provide more Nintendo DS/Wayport-like hotspots for online gaming, and is also looking at ways to bring downloadable movies to PSP owners — which sounds to us like another foot in the grave for the almost-dead UMD. Not all the news here is good, however, as those folks expecting a Sony-branded keyboard for their console will likely be in for a disappointment; in fact, the company has no plans whatsoever to improve text entry on the PSP at all. Other new info centered around games and demos, and since that’s not really our bag, we’ll leave those details to other fine publications like Joystiq and PSP Fanboy.

eFlyBook loads iRex’s iLiad with aviation docs
Author: Bill Naked Teens
If you’ve had your eye on the iLiad eBook reader from Philips spin-off iRex — and also have a need for a lot of boring aviation-related documents — then you may be interested in a new product called the eFlyBook from ARINC that combines both of your passions. Little more than an iLiad pre-loaded with such exciting fare as the US Terminal Procedures Publication, US IFR High & Low Enroute Charts, and an Airport Facility Directory, among others, the eFlyBook is one of the only ways Americans can curently get their hands on iRex’s debut product, pilot or no pilot. You’ll recall that the iLiad is a 400MHz device with an 8-inch, 1,024 x 768 screen that sports both a CF and SD slot for user-supplied content, so besides all the flight documentation, flyboys can also load up the ‘Book with their own novels and magazines to read while letting auto-pilot do all the hard work. Available to order immediately, this rebadged version of the iLiad will set you back a cool $900, plus whatever it costs to update the aviation docs once the included six-month Charts & Data subscription expires. Not the cheapest way to get your eBook on, but until Sony rolls out its own proprietary reader, your options here are still few and far between.
